Maintain your Resin Bonded Driveway over Winter

Resin bonded driveways are a sturdy and long lasting way to protect your driveway over the years. However, they do need special care to stay in the same condition they were in when they were fitted. The colder months have an impact on every aspect of your home. The increased rain and potential for snow can cause damage to your roof, walls and even driveway if not dealt with properly.

Removing Snow

It is tempting to use a heavy duty snow shovel to remove the snow from your driveway. However, this is not necessarily a good idea. Using a metal shovel or snow plough can damage the surface, leaving to puddles forming of water in the damaged sections. This can actually make the situation more dangerous. Using a plastic snow shovel however, is just as effective, but less damaging to the surface.

Adding Grit and Salt

You may wonder whether it is safe to add salt to a resin bound driveway. Fortunately, it is perfectly safe to use rock salt or another grit on your resin bound driveway. This should not damage the surface itself, and can make moving around on the surface safer. However, you should make sure that you do not leave the salt on your drive when the snow and ice melts, as long term presence of salt could damage the area – wash it off to be safe.

Driving on a Resin Bound Driveway

Driving in the snow is not simple, however that doesn’t mean that it is impossible. You need to simply follow some common sense advice. The same lessons are true for driving on a driveway and the road. Take it slow, do not speed up or down too quickly, and allow yourself for more time. Snow and ice provide a slippery, less resistant surface, and as a result can cause cars and vehicles to slip. Make sure that you creep onto or off your driveway at a consistent speed. Rushing is much more like to cause a skid.

Permeable Resin Bound Paving

General care for your resin bound driveway stays true all year round, not just in the winter. Avoid turning your steering wheel when stationary – this can cause tyre marks. A permeable resin bound driveway is not suitable for heavy objects like skips or car parts. Make sure to avoid spilling substances like oil and grease, cement and plaster or petrol and solvents. Spilling any of these substances should be cleaned up as quickly as possible, including removing any hazardous substances and cleaning with a pressure washer in the short term.
